- Purchase an Energy Star washing machine, which uses less energy and 50% less water.
- Check all faucets, toilets, and water lines for leaks. Over two billion gallons of water are lost annually due to household water leaks.
- Keep showers under five minutes. Turn off the water when soaping up.
- Flush the toilet only when necessary. Install a water-efficient toilet.
- Don’t let the water run while you brush your teeth or shave.
- Wash only full loads of clothes. Save energy by using cold water when washing clothes.
- Avoid using garbage disposals. Compost or feed leftovers to pets. Use recycled water in disposal.
- Limit dishwasher to full loads.
- Choose a car wash that recycles water. If you must wash your car at home – use a shut-off nozzle and wash your car in small sections.
- Be smart about watering lawns. Mulch wherever possible to retain water.
